PhD Position (salary 65% E13 TV-L) in Cryo Electron Microscopy

A PhD position is available at the Gene Center Munich within a new DFG funded international PhD training and research group (Graduiertenkolleg GRK1721).

Project Description:

The research project is part of the GRK1721 (http://grk1721.genzentrum.lmu.de) and will be based in the lab of Dr. Petra Wendler at the Gene Center Munich. Aim of the project is to obtain a structural and functional understanding of transient proteasomal precursor complexes using single particle cryo electron microscopy (EM) in combination with other biophysical and biochemical analysis. The successful applicant is expected to isolate macromolecular protein complexes from yeast, collect and analyze cryo EM data, participate in the experimental design and method development and to interact with external and internal collaborators. Techniques involved will include handling of multi protein complexes, high-resolution imaging using cryo EM, image processing, 3D reconstruction and molecular modeling.

Qualifications:

You should have an academic degree equivalent to a Diploma or Master degree and have a strong interest in structural biology and biophysical techniques. Computational skills or experience in statistical analysis are an advantage. You should also have excellent technical skills, very good knowledge of the English language, good interpersonal skills and the enthusiasm to apply and develop new techniques.

Scientific Environment:

The GRK1721 offers a unique and competitive training and research network to study structure and mechanisms of complex macromolecular biological systems. GRK1721 integrates state of the art structural and functional biology approaches with an emphasis on developing structural biology “hybrid methods”. We offer a challenging and interdisciplinary PhD project and an innovative credit based training and mentoring program. The cryo EM project will be based at the Gene Center Munich, one of the most distinguished research institutes at the Ludwig-Maximilians- Universität München (LMU). We provide a stimulating environment, including an open minded, ambitious young team and state-of-the-art cryo EM facilities.

Position:

The Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) funds the position according to TV-L E13 65%. There will be interviews from now on until the position will have been filled. LMU is an equal opportunity employer. Handicapped candidates with equal qualifications will be given preference.
